What Is a HEIC File?
If you've transferred photos from an iPhone to a Windows PC, you've probably encountered .heic files that won't open. Here's everything you need to know about this format and how to deal with it.
HEIC Explained
HEIC stands for High Efficiency Image Container. It's a file format based on the HEIF (High Efficiency Image Format) standard, using HEVC (H.265) video compression technology to encode still images.
In simpler terms: HEIC is a modern image format that produces much smaller files than JPEG while maintaining equal or better image quality. Apple made it the default photo format on iPhones and iPads starting with iOS 11 in September 2017.
Key Features of HEIC
- 50% smaller than JPEG at the same visual quality
- 16-bit color depth for richer colors and better HDR support
- Transparency support (alpha channel), unlike JPEG
- Multiple images in a single file (used for Live Photos, burst sequences)
- Non-destructive editing — edits are stored as instructions, preserving the original
- EXIF metadata support for camera settings, GPS, dates
Why It's a Problem
Despite its technical advantages, HEIC isn't universally supported:
- Windows requires a paid extension ($0.99) for full support
- Web browsers have limited support (Safari works, Chrome doesn't natively)
- Social media and many websites don't accept HEIC uploads
- Older software can't open HEIC at all
- Email attachments may not display for recipients without HEIC support
How to Open HEIC Files
| Platform | Native Support | How to Open |
|---|---|---|
| Mac | Yes (macOS High Sierra+) | Double-click opens in Preview |
| iPhone/iPad | Yes (iOS 11+) | Native Photos app |
| Windows 10/11 | Partial (needs extension) | Install HEIF Extensions from Microsoft Store |
| Android | Yes (Android 10+) | Google Photos or native gallery |
| Linux | Via libheif | Install libheif + GIMP plugin |
| Web | Limited | Convert to PNG or JPG first |
How to Convert HEIC Files
The easiest solution for HEIC compatibility issues is to convert to a universal format. Our free online tools handle this instantly:
- HEIC to PNG — lossless quality, universal support
- HEIC to JPG — smaller files, maximum compatibility
- HEIC to WebP — modern format, best compression
All conversions happen in your browser — your photos are never uploaded to any server.
How to Stop iPhone from Saving HEIC
If you'd rather avoid HEIC entirely, change your iPhone camera settings:
- Open Settings → Camera → Formats
- Select Most Compatible (saves as JPEG instead of HEIC)
Note: This roughly doubles the storage space your photos use.
